First Post: Tentacle Cookies

If you've actually managed to find my little blog here-- welcome!

Like the title says, I am an untrained baker. Even my childhood was woefully lacking in cooking lessons of any kind beyond which buttons to push on the microwave. So I have, like many, been teaching myself through books and blogs.
So, you ask, why a blog? Well, O thought that maybe, if anyone finds me here, they might be willing to share some tips and tricks -- or just their own experiences in baking!

On to the sugar...

Tentacle Cookies!

I have a love/hate relationship with sugar cookies (cookies in general). I love them, they hate me. I've attempted various sugar cookies over the years, usually with moderate at best results. Two weekends ago I tried again, this time with a glaze icing, because I stumbled across a fabulous Octopus cookie cutter over at the Bake It Pretty store, along with a couple other goodies. With the application of a few sugar pearls, an edible ink pen and edible glitter, they came out better than any of my previous attempts, so I'm sharing the cuteness.
They make me want to create a whole underwater scene! I know, I should call them Octopi cookies, but it's much more fun to call them tentacle cookies!

But, I'm still in search of a great tasting sugar cookie recipe that works well for cut-outs, and a glaze icing that doesn't taste like almond - any recommendations?
